Employers should manage and discipline employees at appropriate times and in an appropriate manner. Failure to do so is likely to lead to a claim by an employee for harassment / bullying, unfair dismissal or adverse action.

Defending these claims can cost a significant amount of money and employers can be ordered to pay substantial amounts of money (including compensation and fines), so it makes sense to put policies and procedures in place and consistently follow them.
