Meagan Murrell

Meagan is a Senior Lawyer in our Family Law Team.

Biography

I have returned to Murdoch Lawyers as a Senior Lawyer in the Family Law team based in our Toowoomba office. I moved to Sydney in early 2017 to sharpen my Family Law skills, after developing a keen interest in Family Law while working as a Paralegal and studying. I have practised exclusively in this area since my admission.

I have been working as a Family Lawyer since 2016 and during that time have gained considerable experience in helping steer people through the myriad of difficulties which arise from separation.  As no two families are alike, I enjoy the diverse nature of Family Law and the opportunity it provides to ‘think outside the square’ and strategise.

During my time as a Family Lawyer I have assisted separating parties through a range of financial issues including negotiating and mediating outcomes in terms of immediate issues, such as the sale of a property or arrangements for one person to reside in a property, all the way through to a final division of assets and liabilities.  Where negotiations are unsuccessful or inappropriate, I have vast experience in furthering matters through Court to obtain interim and final orders.

As an experienced Family Lawyer I pride myself on being able to navigate complex structuring and taxation documents and understanding the roles different trading and structuring entities play in people’s financial lives.  My time in Sydney in particular has also afforded me valuable experience in running (and opposing) spousal maintenance applications.

I also regularly assist parents with various parenting dilemmas including establishing manageable parenting arrangements, negotiating flexible parenting scenarios for clients who have particularly demanding work schedules and litigating matters where negotiations are unsuccessful or unsuitable. Often parenting disputes are accompanied by concerns regarding Child Support and I also have considerable experience in negotiating, drafting and advising on Binding Child Support Agreements and Limited Child Support Agreements, as well as appealing Child Support assessments and obtaining Child Support departure orders.

I was drawn to Family Law with the promise of a challenging and rewarding role.  As no two families or relationships are the same, no two days as a Family Lawyer are the same either, and I enjoy the excitement and challenges the diversity in my role presents.  The best part of my job is definitely being able to see the relief on a client’s face at the end of a Family Law matter, and knowing that I have contributed to that person being able to move on with their life and foster a new beginning.

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my husband and two Labradors, soaking up everything South-East Queensland has to offer.  We keep a busy social schedule and enjoy cooking, entertaining and watching AFL, rugby and cricket in our spare time.
