Marty Carne

Marty is a Special Counsel in our Future Planning Team

My law career spans experience in metropolitan and regional areas practising in estate and succession planning as well as commercial law. I am very fortunate to have had a very broad career, full of experiences and learning; but the best part has been the great people I have met and become friends with.

I was admitted into the legal profession in NSW and the ACT in 1998. Prior to that, I was a NSW Police Officer and Director of Enforcement & Surveillance with the Australian Securities Commission.

After my admission as a lawyer, I worked in a boutique commercial law firm on business sales and purchases and in the developing field of superannuation. I was subsequently appointed as General Counsel to a life insurance company and an ASX listed company where I managed a range of regulatory, corporate governance and financial services functions.

In 2007, I joined a financial services business based in Brisbane as Managing Director. We grew that business to be a national provider of financial and legal services for businesses and families, particularly in the rural sector. We specialised in succession planning for businesses and farms with numerous accountants, financial planners, insurance brokers and others referring their clients to us for our trusted advice.

In 2016, we sold the business and I immediately joined a listed financial services company as its Chief Legal Officer. Here, I advised the Board of Directors and other stakeholders on complex corporate governance matters, the changing regulatory landscape and managed a large number of disputes.

More recently I have been a part-time lecturer on corporate governance in an international MBA program.

My wife and I recently did the tree change from Brisbane to Toowoomba and we are really enjoying exploring our new surrounds, especially on our daily walks with our two small dogs.
